Facts about Poverty and Hunger in America

Even in the world’s greatest food-producing nation, children and adults face poverty and hunger in every county across America.

  • More than 38 million people are living in poverty in America. In 2019, most families living in poverty earn less than $25,750 per year.

  • More than 37 million people struggle with hunger in the United States, including more than 11 million children.

  • A household that is food insecure has limited or uncertain access to enough food to support a healthy life.

  • Children are more likely to face food insecurity than any other group in the United States.

  • More than half (56%) of food-insecure households participated in at least one of the major federal food assistance program — the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP, formerly Food Stamps); the National School Lunch Program and the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (often called WIC).

Food Pantry Assistance for Pregnant Mothers
& Children

food.png

Safe Future Foundation believes no child or pregnant mother should go hungry in our community. Safe Future Foundation provides food assistance to expectant mothers facing food insecurity. Our objective is to expand and increase the weekly food distribution of women, including expectant mothers' dietary intake of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and low-fat dairy. Furthermore, distribute three to five food bags of healthy items such as whole grains, milk, beans, peanut butter, fruits, and vegetables for each participant.

Children can't reach their full potential without access to nutritious food. That's why a few of our food pantry objectives include expanding and increasing food accessibility and distribution through Safe Future's "Kids On the Go" after-school snack program. Our next objective includes increasing the number of healthy snack packs distributed per child to have fruit, milk, and peanut butter jelly sandwiches. Moreover, distribute healthy snack packs weekly to increase nutrient and protein intake. Children will learn how to ask for and select more nutritious snacks. Children will learn to identify the different fruits and vegetables packed while implementing healthy eating habits.

WIC provides healthy foods, nutrition tips, breastfeeding help, and referrals to pregnant and breastfeeding women and children under the age of five. With WIC, you can receive monthly checks for up to $50 to buy healthy foods at your local grocery store. (Getting WIC will not affect your immigration status.) WIC is an equal-opportunity program. Learn more here about WIC.
